It’s the Deficit Dummies!

I watched Donald Trump and Elon Musk's press conference today, and it was refreshing to hear Elon address one of the most pressing issues of our time. He was unafraid to discuss the federal deficit and its potential to bankrupt our democracy. Elon has been commissioned to identify and expose waste and inefficiency within the federal government. Estimates suggest that as much as $1 trillion is wasted due to government bureaucracy. If the newly established DOGE organization can help save this money by advocating for efficiency, then I fully support its mission.

How did our bureaucracy become so bloated? Elon explained that government spending is often not allocated to specific budget categories. However, he did not elaborate on the reasoning behind this practice. The nature of American politics naturally leads to waste. To navigate the political landscape, politicians frequently grant favors in exchange for legislative support. These concessions often involve unnecessary expenditures designed to bolster a representative's image with constituents, ultimately contributing to our growing deficit.

The expansion of government regulations has also played a significant role in the growth of the federal bureaucracy. Regulations are typically enacted to ensure that laws are properly executed—a noble goal. However, watchdog organizations that oversee these regulations can become self-perpetuating. Though originally well-intentioned, these agencies rarely work themselves out of existence once they achieve success. Instead, they find ways to exhaust their allocated budgets to justify continued or increased funding in subsequent years. This cycle of inefficiency has led to a bloated government.

According to the Constitution, the U.S. government consists of three branches. Having taught AP History and Government in high school, I noticed that roughly 35% of the curriculum focuses on the executive branch, compared to 20–25% on the legislative and judicial branches. The reason for this disparity is the expansion of government regulations, the increasing number of federal employees, and the growing use of executive orders. The combination of political favoritism and bureaucratic self-preservation has led to an inefficient and wasteful government.

Donald Trump has utilized executive orders to establish DOGE. Throughout history, executive orders have been used to implement controversial changes. Here are some of the most significant:

  • 95: The Emancipation Proclamation

  • 8807: Funding for the Manhattan Project

  • 9066: Japanese Internment Camps

  • 9981: Desegregation of the Military

  • 10730: Deployment of the National Guard to Enforce School Desegregation

  • 10924: Creation of the Peace Corps

  • 11246: Affirmative Action in Government Contracts

  • 13228: Establishment of the Department of Homeland Security

If the executive order establishing DOGE successfully reduces the deficit by $1 trillion, it could be one of the most significant executive orders in U.S. history.

Elon stated that many federal employees are good people, and I agree. The real issue is not fraud but systemic inefficiency. Donald Trump campaigned on "draining the swamp," and I wholeheartedly supported this aspect of his agenda. The American people have expressed their desire for change through both the popular vote and the Electoral College. I believe we should empower him to accomplish this goal. The Federal Deficit is a time of emergency. The executive orders listed above happened in time of emergency. We need to empower the presdency to get this solved.
